Rescue-Restore-Respect: Saving This Puckerbutt 1995 @WeberGrills Outrider

Whoever bought this poor grill back in 1995 (it’s an EO vent code) installed it’s legs upside down making it look very strange and making it’s footprint incredibly narrow and dangerous as it would be pretty top-heavy loaded with lit coals and meat.

History of the Smokey Joe Platinum (AKA Jumbo Joe or Outrider) – Introduced in 1990 from the Weber Kettle Club

After unsticking the rusted on bolts with pb-blaster and replacing all of the hardware with stainless bolts, sanding down the wood handle and applying three coats of teak oil, adding side vents and cleaning her up she’s looking mighty spiffy.

1989 (The Year I Graduated From College) Grey @WeberGrills One-Touch Plus Has Been Secured

Fellow Northeast Weber Kettle Club friend @Azogas agreed to agent this grill for me in Upstate NY.

I’m going all in on the restore and will make it my daily driver at the dock.

She’s gorgeous don’t you think?

Very rare True Grey Upside Down L Code 1989. Look on the lid vent to determine what year your Weber Kettle was produced.  Weber Kettle Club has a chart with all the codes that can be found here

There is a little surface rust that I’m confident will come off.  needs a new triangle, wheels, handles for sure.  This will be a labor of love restoration.

Take a good look at that bowl.  I’ll make it shine with some elbow grease, steel wool and a razor scraper.

It will be a couple of weeks before Al makes the trip to Gloucester from Upstate NY but I’ll keep you all posted on the restoration.

She’s got a cracked table which I’ll have to replace, a little dusty and just a tiny bit of surface rust that I’m confident will come off with some elbow grease, thanks to Weber Kettle Club Forum Member @TheDude ‘s suggestion of using CLR to knock off that surface rust.  I drove an hour and a half away to Rescue her.

The bowl, lid and grates are in excellent shape and with a little elbow grease they’ll shine up nicely.  The ash sweeps turn freely and the ash pan is free of pitting.

There’s really not a ton to do other than clean her up and replace the table.  This is a $450 grill brand new.  With a couple hours of work I can’t wait to shine her up!
